Boy Scout Troop 24

Troop 24 has a long tradition of providing boys the opportunity to learn outdoor skills along with citizenship as they grow into young adulthood. Along the way they practice leadership, learn camping and outdoor survival skills, give back to the community through service, have adventures to share into their old age, come to understand that learning from one's mistakes along with perseverance are keys to success, and most importantly… have fun.

The Troop has been active as a Boy-led troop serving the southeast Portland and Mt. Tabor neighborhoods for over 60 years. We call it a Boy-led Troop because the boys are primarily in charge of running the Troop with the adults as advisors as much as is practical. This has been the case as far back as memory serves. Troop 24 was officially chartered in 1944. However, there was a Troop 24 on record in 1917. That charter was apparently lost in 1943 during the war. Currently the Troop is chartered by St. Paul Lutheran Church.

George Richardson, the grandfather of two boys who eventually became Eagle Scouts was very active with the troop, never missing a campout or special trip. After his death, the Troop set up a memorial fund in his honor, to which scouts could apply to for funding for high adventure trips. That endowment fund, the George Richardson Fund, is still used today to help our Troop to accomplish some of its extra activities that help to make this Troop an exciting group.

Our Troop works hard to uphold the Scout Oath and Law and our reputation as an active and responsible group. This is accomplished by serving our community through a large variety of service projects. Over 70 Scouts in our Troop have earned their Eagle rank, the highest rank earned in Boy Scouting.

We also strive to conduct ourselves in a responsible and courteous manner as we learn, work and grow together.
